What is Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy and who is it for?
You might be familiar with ketamine outside of the context of therapy- ketamine has been used for anesthesia in ERs for procedures like resetting broken bones or as a recreational drug. It has been FDA approved for many years to be used in medical settings, and is now offered in different settings. Ketamine, when used in therapeutic settings, enhances neurogenesis in the brain for a period of time. This means that in that window of time, it is easier to change long standing beliefs, process through trauma, and move toward your goals.
Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) at Best Life is a partnership between Dr. Moriah Conant, PsyD and a medical professional at Journey Clinical. The medical professional will do an assessment to review your medical history and if KAP is an appropriate treatment for you.
Research has shown that KAP has good results with treatment resistant anxiety, depression, and PTSD. When you meet with the Journey Clinical medical professional for the assessment, they will assess your history and if you have a mental health diagnosis.
What should I expect?
Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) is made up of a few types of sessions: preparation, dosing sessions, and integration sessions.
Preparation sessions are an essential part of the process. In the preparation sessions, Dr. Conant will start by conducting an intake to understand your history and identify things like your goals for the process, your chaperone for dosing sessions, and ways to set up your environment for the best experience. Preparation sessions are a vital part of the process because they help you know how to mentally and physically prepare the experience of the dosing sessions.
KAP utilizes a low level dose of ketamine for a dissociative experience during the dosing sessions. Dosing sessions are typically scheduled for 3 hour blocks. Your dose of ketamine will typically create a dissociative experience for up to 40 minutes. Having a 3 hour block allows you time to work with your therapist before and after you take the dose of ketamine.
